Daughter of ex-Indiana, Florida education czar Tony Bennett shot to death. Husband charged

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A woman was shot to death in front of her young daughter inside her Sellersburg, Indiana, home Friday. And her husband is charged with murder.
The victim has been identified as Elizabeth “Lizzie” Bennett Lewis, 32, the daughter of Tony Bennett, the former Indiana state Superintendent of Public Instruction and former Florida Commissioner of Education.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home in the 11000 block of Forrest Hill Circle after Lizzie Bennett’s 11-year-old daughter called to report a shooting.
“She had called while (the suspect) was still actively firing his gun throughout the house and ultimately shooting and killing her mother,” a release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office stated.
Her daughter and her 10-year-old friend “were inside the house and in close proximity to Lewis during the shooting,” police said.

Bennett Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the shooter as her husband, Mac Lewis, who had fled. He was found by Sellersburg Police driving on State Road 60, taken into custody without incident and charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal recklessness with a firearm.
His first court appearance was Monday morning and he is being held without bond.

“The Bennett family has asked that they be given a moment alone to grieve the loss of Lizzie to this senseless act of violence,” a release from the family stated. “They ask that everyone take a moment to recall her as an amazing mother, a devoted sister and a beloved daughter.
“Lizzie gave her short life to caring and helping others. Her choice of becoming a nurse was just an extension of her desire to make the world a better place for everyone. She will be missed by her two children and all that knew her.”
Tony Bennett served as state superintendent for four years and then briefly as the Florida state superintendent.
